Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) uses focused magnetic pulses, similar in strength to those used in an MRI, to stimulate areas of the brain involved in regulating mood. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is FDA-cleared for adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from antidepressant medication in their current episode. It is also cleared to decrease anxiety symptoms that occur alongside MDD, and as an add-on (adjunct) treatment for adults with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). For adolescents ages 15 to 21, NeuroStar is also FDA-cleared as an add-on (adjunct) treatment for major depressive disorder.
TMS is an outpatient treatment. There is no anesthesia or sedation, and you can return to your normal activities right after each session.
Benefits of TMS Therapy

NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared for adults with major depressive disorder, for anxiety symptoms in those adults, as an adjunct for adults with OCD, and as an adjunct for major depressive disorder in adolescents ages 15 to 21. Before starting treatment, our provider completes a full evaluation to decide whether TMS is appropriate for you.

Depression can drain energy, motivation, and joy from everyday life. When antidepressant medication has not brought enough relief, NeuroStar TMS offers a different approach. It is FDA-cleared for adults with major depressive disorder who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from antidepressant medication in their current episode, and it works alongside your ongoing psychiatric care. For adolescents ages 15 to 21, NeuroStar is FDA-cleared as an adjunct treatment for major depressive disorder, used alongside other care.

Many people living with depression also experience anxiety, such as constant worry, tension, or restlessness. NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared to decrease anxiety symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder who have not improved enough with antidepressants and who also experience anxiety. For anxiety disorders without depression, our psychiatric services team offers evaluation and personalized treatment.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can bring persistent intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that are hard to control. NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared as an adjunct treatment for adults with OCD, which means it is used together with other care, such as medication or therapy, rather than on its own. We coordinate TMS with your psychiatric treatment plan.

Before you begin, one of our psychiatric providers will complete an evaluation to review your history and confirm that TMS is a good fit, then map your personalized treatment settings. Your daily sessions are delivered by our TMS treaters, who have completed NeuroStar clinical training, with your provider overseeing your care throughout.
During each session, you sit in a comfortable treatment chair while a small magnetic coil rests gently against your head. You will hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your scalp. You stay awake the entire time and can talk, read, or watch TV.

NeuroStar TMS has been studied in clinical trials and in real-world practice. In a real-world study of 615 adults with depression, 83% of patients who completed a full course of NeuroStar treatment experienced a measurable improvement in their depression, and 62% reached remission.¹ Individual results vary.
At Mindtra, TMS is part of a complete psychiatric care plan. Our provider monitors your progress throughout treatment and continues to support you after your course ends.

Feeling sad or "blue" from time to time is normal, and these moods usually pass within a few days. Clinical depression, however, is more than occasional sadness. It can interfere with daily life, make routine activities difficult, and lead to significant emotional distress.
